ALOE (VERA) BARBADENSIS – The aloe plant, a member of the lily family, is actually a succulent that closely resembles a cactus whose gel is made up of leaf pulp or mucilage - a thin, clear, jelly-like substance obtained from the parenchymal tissue that makes up the inner portion of the leaves. With soothing, calming affects, aloe is known to improve skin hydration, work as an anti-inflammatory and aid in the healing of cuts, grazes, insect bites and burns due its capacity to accelerate the turnover of collagen.
Containing carbohydrate polymers, such as glucomannans and pectic acid, plus various other organic and inorganic compounds, including some antiseptic agents (lupeol, salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamonic acid, and phenoland sulfur), aloe is able to help prevent immune suppression caused by UVB light by repairing damage to langerhans cells. The polysaccharides, including the acetylated mannans, seem to give aloe its immune-stimulant properties where salicylate and carboxypeptidase are responsible for its anti-inflammatory activity.
HYALURONIC ACID - Hyaluronic acid is a natural glycosaminoglycan, polysaccharides that are an important component of connective tissue and joint fluids that may be derived from multiple resources such as foods and supplements. HA occurs naturally in the body, especially in younger skin tissue.
With the ability to retain over a 1000 times its weight in water within skin cells, no other biological substance has the ability retain as much water as HA. In addition, hyaluronic acid also has the ability to remove waste matter from cells including those where there is little blood circulation and reverse free radical damage, protecting skin from UV damage.
As we age, the amount of hyaluronan decreases, making it much more difficult for skin to retain moisture, which in turn, causes it to lose elasticity and firmness. Hyaluronic acid, with its unique ability to contain high levels of moisture, increases hydration and elasticity, making it an excellent choice for moisturizers, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and plumping skin. In addition, HA is a “smart nutrient”, adjusting its moisture absorption rate based on the humidity relative to the season and the climate.
In cosmeceuticals, hyaluronic acid is often considered equally important to collagen where the most common application for HA is in pro-youth treatments, being touted for its ability to reverse, or even stop, the aging of skin. And unlike collagen, hyaluronic acid is able to penetrate the skin’s upper layers to improve and benefit the skin when applied topically.
