What is a paraben? A paraben is a group of compounds used as a preservative in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. These compounds are used mostly for bactericidal and fungicidal properties. They are usually found in shampoo, moisturizers, shaving gels, makeup and toothpaste. Parabens have been found in breast cancer tumors which makes this topic so controversial. Parabens also have been found to slightly mimic estrogen supposedly causing early puberty in girls. Jan Marini, one of the main skincare brands used at Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon, has a variety of products that do not contain parabens. Jan Marini has a growing list of products that are paraben free including retinol plus, clean zyme, antioxidant face protectant, bioclear, skin zyme and transformation face cream to name a few.
