Master Aesthetician Patricia at Red Lotus Facial and Skin Salon in Beaverton, Oregon talks about how Raw Coconut Oil is one of the best kept beauty secrets around.Read Now
Dry skin, eczema, dry hair, weight loss, all the answers in a jar of raw coconut oil?
Coconut oil has many different uses. Using it instead of olive oil or vegetable oil in cooking is a great alternative but it can be used in your beauty routine as well.
Coconut oil is sold in jars at about $10 a jar. We recommend getting virgin coconut oil which is easily found at Trader Joes at half that price. Some things that you can cook with coconut oil are eggs, cookies, salad dressings, smoothies, curry, oatmeal and even popcorn. Coconut oil has a slight buttery taste but without all the trans fat.
Now besides cooking what else can you use it for?
Mouthwash ~ Using coconut oil instead of mouthwash is believed to do a better job of getting rid of plaque and other bacteria in our mouths, and boosting the immune system overall. Simply use like you would a regular mouthwash. Swish for a few minutes and spit.
Moisturizing ~ The oil strengthens and removes excessive dead cells which make the skin dry and rough. Coconut oil has no chemicals in it making a better option then some lotions you get at the drugstore.
Hair Conditioner ~ Coconut oil can help grow hair long, strong and healthy. It also keeps the hair shiny.
Treat Eczema ~ Eczema can be treated with coconut oil because it is very moisturizing, easily soaks into the skin and contains no ingredients that can irritate the skin.
Cuticle Oil ~ Have a problem with hangnails? Coconut oil may be the solution. Rub some into your cuticles and let it work it's magic. Also use it for dry hands and feet.

Ways to Keep Your Lash Extensions on Longer and look better, from Red Lotus Lash Salon in Portland, Oregon.Read Now
1. Sleep on your back
This might sound like a crazy request (unless you already sleep on your back), but it's really important directly following your application, since the glue takes a while to dry fully and you'll otherwise get weird kinks. After a night or two, resume your normal sleeping position. Special trick sleep with eye mask to keep from crunching them.
2. Give your lashes a little TLC (Tender Lash Care)
When removing your eye makeup (liner, shadow, etc.), gently go over the area with a gentle makeup remover that contains no oil instead of placing cotton pads or puffs over your lids—not only could you eventually weaken the extensions and mess them up, the cotton fibers get stuck on lashes. (Not cute). Makeup remover wipes can also snag the lashes which can pull them out prematurely and leave fibers. I always make my own cleanser with baby shampoo, baking soda and a foam pump bottle with water. Put lots of bubbles on the lashes, gentle pressing the bubbles into the lashes with the middle finger and thumb. Careful not to tangle them just squeeze soap in with fingers to top and bottom of lashes. Rinse by cupping water up to eye, than pat dry with towel and gently comb down onto the cheek to organize the lashes a bit, than let air dry.
3. No oil
Oil weakens the glue bond on your lash extensions causing them to clump and stick together and can make them fall off sooner.
4. Comb them out
To prevent any criss-crossing or wonky-looking lashes, use a spoolie or mascara wand. Close one eye, place the spoolie on top of your lashes, then roll the brush over lashes to keep them defined. However, combing over and over again can pull out the lashes.
5. Resist playing with them
Your eyelashes shed naturally, so when you have extensions, this will help push them off. If an extension looks out of place, avoid playing with it or twisting or pulling it off—you'll risk losing your natural lashes. Let them come out on their own, and use a spoolie to brush them back into place in the meantime.

Why do I need to cleanse my face before bed? Master Aethetician Patricia at Red Lotus Skin Peel & Lash Salon in Portland, talks about why cleansing before bed is important to keeping you younger longer.Read Now
Cleansing is a huge part of every skincare routine and there are good reasons behind it.
~Research shows cleansing before bed is essential to looking younger, longer.
Every day your skin is aging. And the very simple process of washing your face before bed is an excellent way to mitigate the external factors associated with aging and to stimulate the internal processes that fight aging.
Research has shown that certain physiological changes in the skin do occur overnight. Like many of our organs, our skin can tell night from day. Biological processes vary over 24 hours as a result of time-sensitive “clocks” within our cells, said Dr. David R. Weaver, a neurobiology professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Some evidence exists linking circadian clocks to cell cycle (cells dividing to replenish dead ones) and DNA repair, the natural process by which a cell regularly detoxifies itself. (Impact Journals: Aging.)
Overnight, the skin needs oxygen to repair itself. And sleeping with your makeup on deprives it of this vital nutrient. Even if you do not wear makeup you want to cleanse to remove pollutants, bacteria and unwanted debris off of our face.
~Nighttime cleansing is essential for letting anti-aging ingredients work.
Nocturnal blood flow in the skin is higher. And when blood flow is increased so is absorption and penetration of ingredients. So again, if you aren't washing you can't apply actives that will help fight aging (or acne or whatever your skin condition might be).
Thus, If you don't wash your face before bed it’s a missed opportunity to do something great for your skin and to wake up with smoother, softer, clearer skin.
~Forgoing nighttime cleansing regularly will give you larger pores.
First, consider that excess sebum (oil), dead skin cells, and pollution are sitting on your face. Not to mention makeup (and just because you don't wear foundation is no excuse). A cleanser will emulsify all of these and remove them from the surface of your skin. According to Dr. Dennis Gross, M.D., when makeup is left on it can seep deep down, clogging pores. He also says that once your collagen levels start to decline (due to aging), the pores do not snap back as easily once they become enlarged. And, leaving makeup on can lead to inflammation that can generate free radicals and collagen breakdown.
~Nighttime cleansing prevents skin dehydration.
Skin temperature rises overnight which leads to trans-epidermal water loss (evaporation).
This in part causes the skin to lose a significant portion of water at night. According to an article, Nocturnal Itch, by the Departments of Dermatology and Neurobiology & Anatomy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is significantly increased during the night, which is why our skin can sometimes feel more itchy at night. Thus, if you don't wash your face, you can't apply a moisturizer which will help hydrate your skin while you sleep.
Daytime cleansing prevents excess oil production.
I know what you’re thinking: So why then do I have to wash it again in the morning; I went to bed with it clean? As we just learned, overnight your skin recovers. Which means in the morning you have more dead skin cells to slough off. And more excess sebum to emulsify. These can’t be rinsed away with mere water. Same with dead skin cells and excess sebum…you need to dislodge them & then rinse them away. Water alone removes only about 65% of oil and debris from the surface of the skin.

How to really deep clean your skin and why is deep cleansing important in the facial room? Master Aesthetician Patricia from Red Lotus Skin Peel and Lash Salon in Beaverton, talks about how to deep clean skin.Read Now
Every time you receive a facial deep cleansing, which can include a gentle brushing, it helps to get down deep into the pores removing traces of makeup, dirt, and oil. However, brush cleaning is not for every skin type, and some skin types may notice too much irritation with brushing and are best with lots of massaging during the cleansing step really working up a lather and allowing a minute before washing it off.
Deep cleansing is important in the facial room because we want the products we are putting onto the skin to really penetrate and be most effective. Cleansing the skin is one of the most important steps because it removes anything that can block another product from being effective to it's full strength. Sometime a double cleansing step is needed with either a milky cleanser and a sudsy cleanser after or even 2 sudsy cleanses. Then, a toning step that may have acids in it, or just hydrating vitamins and plant extracts. Next step is some type of exfoliation that can be as gentle as a gommage' that manually exfoliates while massaging skin with plant extracts that help the skin loosen and roll off. Lite acids, enzymes or microdermabrasion are all forms of more deeply cleansing the skin of debris so the skin will be prepared to accept the treatment to than improve the skin conditions you may have.

New Eye Care Products from PCA Skin
The eye area is a common concern among most patients, and they will be looking to you for advice regarding the best ways to fight the visible signs of aging. There are so many products on the market that claim to “erase” wrinkles instantly, which is simply not achievable. An aged eye area can make a person look much older than they truly are, making it an area many are looking to correct.
As with many of the conditions skin care clinicians treat, correcting the common visible signs of aging in the eye area requires addressing multiple conditions at once. The typical complaints include:wrinklinglaxitydark circles, puffiness, sagging upper eyelids. Most products currently available on the market address only one or two of these concerns, while our new Ideal Complex: Revitalizing Eye Gel and Ideal Complex: Restorative Eye Cream takes a multifaceted approach never seen in eye products before. The two formulas allow for every patient’s preference to be fulfilled. The gel is light and quick-absorbing, while the cream is rich and provides the addition of optical diffusers to deliver instant brightness. Regardless of which product you choose, both will exceed expectations and deliver excellent, visible results.

Tight and tender jaw and sleepless nights are so exhausting to the hectic holiday season. At Red Lotus skin care salon in Beaverton, sport massage therapist Aumkara talks about TMJ and sleeplessness.
"Holiday Season challenges? Hmm chewing what to give for Holiday gifts? Is that chewing of your thoughts adding to your TMJ and loosing sleep? Upsetting your digestion and separating the useful gifts from the not? general Holiday overload? Lets start with the chewing and calming down the TMJ.
The Small Intestine meridian begins on the pinky finger and ends on chew muscles in front of the ear. If you put your pinky there on that where when you move your jaw it meets and push you will likely find a sore spot. Try testing only one side at a time. By backing off the pressure and rotating a small circle (likely counter clockwise) then pushing again the sore spot will ease. Try the other direction or just push increasing pressure as you can so the soreness subsides. Give this a bit of practice and a few minutes and your jaw will likely relax. This can also help with sleeplessness, though some minerals in a liquid may also be needed to balance the blood chemistry helping the body to relax. Also spices such as cinnamon or cardamom in warm milk can help with dissolved gas in the blood stream that can also contribute to sleeplessness.
Now on to the second issue; what gifts to give. A strong, flexible pain-free body is a great gift and a session of Structural Myotonic Meridian Flow bodywork with Aumkara can help achieve these goals by facilitating the bodies natural healing abilities. To help the digestion of fund management this season, 25% off individual session gift certificates, 5 pack of 60 and 90 minute sessions and 12 packs of 60 and 90 minute sessions are available now till December 24th. Massage & Body Treatments
Tis’ the season for dry, irritated, dull skin. When temperatures cool, moisture content in the air decreases, which often means we need to boost the hydration techniques in our skin care regimens. Common sense would tell us to switch to a heavy moisturizer and scale back on cleansing, but it’s just the opposite that actually helps maintain the skin’s moisture barrier. This time of year, proper cleansing is essential (it allows the nourishing ingredients to actually penetrate the skin rather than pile on top) and I usually recommend clients opt for a nourishing, hydrating serum rather than a heavy cream.
One ingredient that is top on my list this time of year is grape seed oil. Not only does it deliver a potent dose of antioxidants, it also hydrates, fights free-radical damage, protects capillary walls, and provides anti-inflammatory support. Who would have thought such a tiny seed could possess so much strength?
WHAT IT IS
Vitis Vinifera seeds, or grape seeds, contain proteins, fats, carbohydrates, polyphenols and proanthocyanidins, which all work together to promote skin health, rejuvenation and protect it from potential damagers. The oil is simply a derivative of the crushed grape seeds.
The proanthocyanidins found in the oil refer to a larger class of polyphenols called flavanols, similar to flavonoids. Grape seed oil is also considered an essential fatty acid, containing linoleic and oleic acids, which provide anti-inflammatory, moisturizing and healing support.
HOW IT WORKS
Grape seed oil produces a number of benefits to the skin primarily because of its potent polyphenol and antioxidant content, which has shown to be more powerful than vitamins C and E. This combination makes it an effective free-radical scavenger.
The proanthocyanidins in grape seeds, which, as I noted are a class of polyphenols, work to protect capillary walls, inhibit the enzymes that break down collagen and thus promote skin elasticity. Studies have also revealed grape seed extracts to accelerate new tissue growth, and stimulate cell renewal by boosting production of vascular epidermal growth factor and increasing protective antibacterial compounds in wounds.
WHERE TO FIND IT
Grape seed oil and extracts can be found in Rhonda Allison Grape Seed Hydrating Serum, which is wonderful this time of year if only for its aroma – cinnamon and clove! The ingredient is also in our Blushed Wine Gel, a firming and toning moisture gel that leaves skin with an iridescent glow, and our Grape Seed Parfait Mask, which moisturizes, strengthens and soothes the skin.
Grape seed oil is beneficial any time of year, but during the winter months it will help your clients stave off dry, dull skin.

Here's a tip on how to remove your own eyelash extensions... Don't! At Red Lotus Skin and Lash salon here in Beaverton, we offer complimentary lash fixes if your sticks together where it should not or one has just grown out too much and we did you original work. So please there is no good way to do it yourself, we have tried it all with miserable results. Recently I have had new clients tell me they removed their eyelash extensions themselves and the result was bald spots. Removing eyelash extensions yourself can cause permanent damage to your lash line. But i am here to tell you some tips on how to avoid badly done lash extensions in the first place.
1. Do your research. There are a lot of places claiming to have been trained in lash extensions but do not use proper safety methods. The esthetician should have a certificate showing they had proper training and it is okay to ask to see their certificate if you are concerned. Oregon requires the certificate to be posted as well.
2. Ask friends who have had them done. Word of mouth is a great way to find out which places are safe and which are not.
3. Read reviews. Reviews are a good way to see how people feel. However, this is not the most accurate way because some places pay review sites to only show good reviews so be cautious!
4. Don't be afraid to ask questions about your service. Do your research and see how the service is performed and if the esthetician is doing something different then what you may have read, ask why.
5. Lastly, if you've had a bad experience, most eyelash extension technicians have glue remover that melts the glue and slides easily off the eyelash causing no damage.

If your wondering why your skin is dry this winter ..... here are some cold weather skin care tips from Red Lotus skin care salon in Beaverton.
Cold weather can play havoc with your beauty regimen, leaving you with dry, flaky skin. Here are some tips to help your skin with the new weather.
1. Turn down the heater!
The very first day you turn on the heat for autumn’s cold weather, you start drying your skin. Tip…Turn that heater to a lower setting before going to bed. You’ll sleep better…the lower setting will be easier on your skin…and you’ll save some household heating energy and dollars! If you have a humidifier, dig it out and run it in your bedroom a couple of hours before bedtime. Hydrated skin is happy skin!
2. Moisturize more!
And make sure your moisturizer meets the specific requirements of cold weather. If you’re using a water-based moisturizer, be sure it contains effective humectants—ingredients that hold onto water—to lock moisture within your skin. This is doubly important when you’re over forty. Examples of humectant ingredients used in facial creams are glycerin, propylene glycol and hyaluronic acid.
Use oils in creams rather than water-based. Oils form a protective layer on the skin that helps it retain more moisture.
3. Hydrate from within!
Here and there on the internet, an occasional dermatologist or cosmetologist is catching up with what I've been saying for years. We used to be told: Drink water. For extremely dry skin types, water sometimes is not enough.
So what does work? Simple: Be sure you enjoy fresh squeezed vegetable juice regularly (ideally daily!), eat raw foods, and cut out processed foods as much as you can.
Four… Eat more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These limit water loss in skin cells. There are three important omega-3 fatty acids:
BUT MY FAVORITE SKIN SECRET IS GREEN TEA WITH RAW COCONUT OIL. YOU WILL HAVE MOIST SMOOTH SKIN, LOOSE WEIGHT AND FULL FULL AND SATISFIED. . recipe is dragon well green tea steeped 21/2 min
I like raw whole milk or you can use and dairy free sub you like, (coconut milk)
small spoon raw coconut oil.
Have 3 to 4 cups a day and you will love the results.
I'm losing my eye lashes!! The Lash Growth Cycle is an important subject to understanding for eyelash shedding. At Red Lotus Lash Salon in Portland, we teach our clients who have lash extensions how their lash cycles affect when to get lash extensions and the importance of time between lash growth cycles. Long, thick eyelashes are touted as one of the most desirable features a person can have. Thousands of products are sold to enhance the look of lashes, from mascara to lash conditioner to lash extensions. So, when you wake up in the morning and notice an eyelash or two that have fallen out and are resting on your cheeks, it can be a little unsettling. But it's important to understand that this is normal process, because like every other hair on your body, eyelashes are perpetually moving through a natural growth cycle.
Eyelashes are not just a pretty feature on the body; they have a very specific and important function. Eyelashes are designed to prevent objects from getting in the eyes. Each eyelash is actually a sensory hair that reflexively shuts the eyelid whenever it is touched by dirt, dust or anything else that could possibly get in the eye. The upper lid typically has about 90 to 150 lashes on it, while the bottom has between 70 and 80 lashes. Most eyelashes grow to be about 10 mm long (just over 3/8 inch). But eyelash growth also depends on the person and how the lashes are treated.
Anagen (Growth) Phase:
The anagen phase is also called the growth phase. This is the phase when lashes are actively growing, and it lasts between 30 and 45 days. Only about 40 percent of the upper lashes and 15 percent of the lower lashes are in the anagen phase at any one time. Each lash will grow to a specific length and then stop.
Catagen (Transition) Phase:
The catagen phase is also known as the transition phase. During this phase, the lash stops growing and the hair follicle shrinks. If an eyelash falls out or is plucked out during this phase, it won't grow back right away because the follicle needs to complete the catagen phase before it can move on to the next one. This phase lasts between two and three weeks.
Telogen (Resting) Phase:
The telogen phase is also referred to as the resting phase. This phase can last more than 100 days before the eyelash falls out and a new one begins to grow. Because each individual lash is in its own phase of the growing cycle, it's normal for a few lashes to fall out most days. It typically takes between four and eight weeks to fully replace an eyelash.
