How does my every day makeup is creating my blackheads, acne and bumpy skin? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon talks about how much your makeup can be affecting your skin.

So we talked about your skin at night (resting on a pillow case), but what about during the day? Many of us wear makeup, either occasionally or for everyday coverage. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look your best, but putting on foundation, blush, concealer, etc. everyday could be making your skin less healthy.

Many makeup brands, I’m going to say most, use ingredients that can cause you harm. Last September we talked about 10 toxic ingredients found commonly in makeup. We wrote that article because the thought of putting those chemicals on our skin freaks us out, and we're kind of confused about why these toxic chemicals are being put in makeup products to begin with.

Unnatural makeup products can clog your pores, irritate your skin, and create a barrier that keeps your skin from breathing. So, your skin gets worse over time as you use them.
We favor natural mineral makeups without added preservatives and fragrances. They're a healthy way to even out your skin tone and cover imperfections. We recommend Revercel tinted sunblock, Jan Marini daily face protectant and Rhonda Allison sheer tint finisher. Which are all available for purchase on our website at www.redlotusskincaresalon.com in the lotus store!

Overusing products with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide can actually have negative side effects like redness, dryness and skin irritations. Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon talks about skin care overuse of certain ingredients.

Skin gets used to what you put on it. If you’re feeding it well, awesome! If you’re not, then there can be problems. A common ingredient that skin gets addicted to is benzoyl peroxide. Usually prescribed for acne, it clears up the skin by killing bacteria and reducing oil production. In the long term, it is extremely drying for most skin types, essentially working like a bleach. Ouch!

Alkaline benzoyl peroxide disturbs your skin’s acid mantle, which should be at a pH of between 4.5-5.5. Once you stop using it, your skin starts to re-balance itself to its natural pH. During what is essentially a detox process, many people find that they break out.

Have patience! These skin detox-induced breakouts should subside after a few weeks. And there are lots of natural remedies for acne and other skin conditions.Rhonda Allison Beta Green tea cleanser and lotion are gentle and great at keeping breakouts away! Available for purchase in the lotus store at www.redlotusskincaresalon.com

Why does my toner have alcohol in it? Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon talks about why you should be cautious when using daily skincare products that contain alcohol.

5/31/2015

Picture
Why is there alcohol in your skin care products? They're used to help ingredients mix together to form a finished product, act as preservatives, and temporarily shrink your pores.

Why don’t you want them there? Some alcohols used in skin care are drying, irritating, and damaging to your skin, and many contain petroleum-derived additives that you definitely don’t want on your face.

Even the types of alcohols that are pretty much harmless aren’t doing anything good for your skin, but if you replaced the alcohol with healing aloe juice, your skin would be singing joyful noises (or dancing or painting or doing whatever your skin does when it wants to express itself).

All we’re saying is, be choosy when it comes to the ingredients in your skin care. There are so many plant-based ingredients out there that your skin loves, so there’s no need to settle for skin-drying alcohols. All of our skincare products that we carry contain no alcohol or drying ingredients.

Can my pillow be breaking me out, a major factor in sneaky stubborn acne? Using laundry detergent with toxic chemicals can have negative side effects on your skin.  Red Lotus Skin Peels and Lash Salon, in Portland, Oregon teaches about acne and skin car

Bet you didn't see this one coming!

Last November (sounds so long ago already!) we talked about chemicals found in laundry detergents that you might be using, some of which are linked to cancer, lung damage, and hormone disruption. Given that your clothes are on your body all day and you sleep on your pillows all night, you might want to think twice about what you use to launder them.

Is using chemical detergents to wash your pillow cases causing your acne or wrinkles? Probably not. But it’s definitely not helping, and some people are more sensitive to chemical irritation than others. Either way, having those substances near your face (for ⅓ of your life!) does not a happy complexion (or body) make. You might try making your own detergent if DIY is your style.

After switching the detergent, proper skin care products may be required to help clear out any breakouts. We recommend PCA skin peels and proper homecare.

How important is it to keep myself hydrated? Not keeping yourself hydrated shows on the skin! Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon tells you why you need to stay hydrated.

We've all heard that statistic that says we're pretty much just a bunch of water that look like humans walking around the planet. Yet we still find reasons not to hydrate: “Water is boring…” “Having to pee all the time is inconvenient…” “I hate washing cups…”

We know that we need water to do all the things our body needs to do. One is transporting nutrients to the places they need to go. Another is flushing out the toxins we don't want hanging around. So do yourself a favor in 2015 and drink up!

Personally, the constant motion of drinking from a cup kind of annoys me. I’d just rather drink out of a straw. So I use one of those obnoxiously huge cups with a built in straw, add a squeeze of lemon and ice and take sips throughout the day. Maybe having an awesome water receptacle would work for you, too.

Facials geared towards hydration can also be beneficial.

Does eating too much sugar cause adult acne or effect my skin? Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon talks about how eating too much sugary foods can lead to the skin looking... older!

5/31/2015

Picture
We all have times where we eat too much sugary foods or sweets, but it can do damage on how our skin looks and ages.

A 2013 study looked at the connection between blood sugar and aging. Participants who tested with higher blood sugar levels were also rated as looking older. Crazy, right?

Looking older shouldn’t be the only reason you avoid eating sugar, but it is one effect that this addictive substance seems to have. Constantly spiking our blood sugar levels and then later crashing down is an unhealthy cycle that many of us subject our bodies to, and our skin shows it.

We recommend making informed choices about which kind of sweetener you use and paying attention to how much sugar is in the prepared foods that you buy. For those of us who maybe haven’t perfected the art of making “meals” (ahem, guilty), simply eliminating Justin’s Organic Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups from your breakfast menu might be an easy place to start.

What benefits does lemon have on the skin? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon gives you all you need to know about lemon and your skin care.

Lemon is best known for it’s ability to cleanse toxins from any part of the body and is widely used to stimulate lymph drainage, to rejuvenate energy, purify skin and act as a bug repellant.

According to a study published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology last year, lemon oil may actually be the most powerful anti-microbial agent of all the essential oils.

Another study published in Experimental Biology and Medicine found that breathing in the scent of lemon essential oils improved neurological activity that promotes the breakdown of body fat.

Lemon oil is one of the most “essential” oils to have on hand and can be used as teeth whitener, laundry freshener, cellulite cream, face wash and household cleaner.

From what we can tell, Ayurvedic medicine has been using both lemons and lemon essential oil to treat a wide spectrum of health conditions for at least 1,000 years.  The health benefits of lemon essential oil have been well established scientifically.

Lemon Oil BenefitsAccording to Alva’s Ayurveda Medical College assistant professor Dr. J.V. Hebbar, the benefits of lemon include:
  • Cleansing and purification
  • Oral health and remedy for halitosis (bad breath)
  • Digestion
  • Thirst quencher
  • Remedy for abdominal colic pain
  • Cough relief
  • Calms stomach and relieves nausea
  • Prevents malabsorption
  • Improves digestion
  • Nourishes the skin
  • Promotes Weight loss
Lemon and lemon essential oil are also used to decrease cholesterol deposition in the blood vessels and prevent heart disease!

Spring cleaning!
Why not try essential oils to degrease and disinfect.

Here is our favorite recipe for all purpose cleaner:
2 cups Filtered water
2 Tablespoons Liquid Castile Soap
20 drops Lemon Oil
10 drops Tea Tree Oil
20 drops Rosemary Oil

Mix well in a spray top container and you're ready to clean.

Sweet Orange Oil and Eucalyptus are commonly used in cleaners also.

We hope you enjoy our creations!

Will eyelash extensions make my natural eyelashes fall out?! Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon answers the most asked lash question.

5/31/2015

Picture
The question we are asked most by first time eyelash extension clients is, ” Will I lose my natural lashes by wearing extensions?” The general answer to this is no, wearing extensions will not cause your natural lashes to fall out.
Your natural eyelashes are on a cycle, which can last anywhere from 45 to 90 days, and will naturally fall out on their own when it reaches that time in that cycle. You may notice your natural lashes falling out more than before, because there is an extension attached to it, making it more noticeable. If you pick and pull at your extensions, you may cause one of more lashes to prematurely fall out, which will then take your natural lash longer to grow in. However, if you don’t do these things, your natural lashes will not be adversely affected by your eyelash extensions. Cleansing the lashes twice daily is also very important in maintaining good lash health.

Clients who have healthy and strong lashes are the best candidates for eyelash extensions. Clients with weaker, thinner lashes may want to wear the lighter weight lash extensions, so that there is not a lot of weight on their natural lashes. A product that works great for those with weak lashes is the Jan Marini: Marini Lash eyelash conditioner. It is also a wonderful product for clients who have strong lashes as well, since it will help your natural lashes stay healthy and strong.

How can I have a gentle skin peel and the use of flower acids for skin peels by Rhonda Allison? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon tells you about flower acids.

5/31/2015

Picture
Flower acids (phytic and pyruvic acids)—obtained from hibiscus chalices and lotus flowers, these are classified as second-generation AHAs because of they are non-irritating and provide more hydration than lactic acid while still stimulating turnover. Look to flower acid peels and masks (which clients love this time of year) to brighten skin tone, soften and dissolve cellular build up, balance oil production, rejuvenate the skin by creating desquamation, and deliver healing and hydrating support.

At Red Lotus, we use a few products in our treatment room that contain these acids. After using an acid, we then hydrate the skin with epidermal growth factors.

Daisy flower (Bellis perennis), a natural brightener, it counteracts age spots and balances hyperpigmentation. It decreases tyrosinase synthesis and reduces melanin production in the melanosomes.

Lotus (Lotus japonicus symbiosome) actively works to inhibit tyrosine activity and when used in an acid formula these effects are boosted. Lotus also has anti-inflammatory and healing properties, improves skin tone and provides hydration.

Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) has potent hydrating and soothing properties, and contains a unique mix of organic acids that are non-irritating. Hibiscus is very effective in softening and dissolving acne cysts, balancing oil production, and brightening and rejuvenating the skin by creating desquamation, and delivering healing and hydrating support.
Spring-themed treatments great for this season

12 Flower Facial—this treatment uses a combination of hibiscus flower acid, lactic acid (L) and pineapple enzymes to stimulate cell regeneration, along with a 12 Flower Mask to infuse the skin with vital nutrients and antioxidants, and provide hydration and brightening benefits. Skin is left soft, glowing and radiant. Clients also love the delicious tropical scent.

What is Glycolic Acid and why is it used on skin or in facials? Red Lotus Skin Care Salon in Portland, Oregon teaches you about glycolic acid and its benefits.

5/31/2015

Picture
Glycolic acid is part of the group of active compounds known as AHA's (alpha hydroxy acids). Derived from cane sugar:
  • It has the smallest molecules in the group so is able to penetrate skin deeply and easily, making it the most effective for treating fine lines, acne, blackheads, dullness, oiliness etc
  • Chemical peels use a high percentage of this acid and can be very effective if done safely and properly.
  • An even better way to use it is with a lower percentage on a consistent basis which can give the same results as heavier peels but much easier and safer (and often gives betterresults as the consistent application makes them cumulative)

What are the benefits of glycolic acid?
  • Provides a remarkably even exfoliation of the skin
  • Releases and dissolves dead skin cells - clearing up blocked pores and blackheads
  • A very effective acne treatment - particulary cystic acne which is caused by deep blockages of dead skin cells and sebum
  • Reduces fine lines and signs of premature aging by increasing cell turnover - meaning younger, healthier cells are now visible on the skin's surface
  • Acne scars (and other scar lesions) respond well to consistent glycolic acid treatment
  • Further products and treatments can penetrate deeper as it removes the 'barrier' of dead cells and surface grime
  • The effects are compound - meaning frequent use will provide better and better skin
  • It minimizes the appearance of pores by keeping them clear and helping the surrounding cells to strengthen and regain elasticity

Glycolic acid—an exfoliating alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that will enhance the skin’s rejuvenation and provide deeper cleansing with minimal irritation. You might start with a glycolic- and herb-based cleanser to soften skin cells, reduce cellular build up, and provide antibacterial and antiseptic support. A botanical fruit acid lotion with glycolic and salicylic acids will continue the mild exfoliation while supporting the antibacterial and lipid-reducing properties of the cleanser.

Most  franchise massage/ facial places like you find on discount sites, in my opinion, do a facial it is a mediocre cleansing, some scrub stuff that does nothing but scratch up you skin and than heavy goop that smells good as a cream or mask.  I believe facials have stepped into the future with Rhonda Allison, Pce and Jan Marini at Red Lotus with master aesthetician Patricia Barnett.  "When I see my clients or even a new client for that matter I want to know a few details.  One.... What kind of facial are they wanting, two..... what do they have going on in their life that week or so and three.... What kind of results do they expect.  Than I customize a facial protocol specifically to achieve the results they want.   Really listening to client needs and goals is important in the facial and can give you so much more for your money when having a facial.  Why just have a fluff and buff when you  can spend that same 60 dollars and really see some brightening, tightening and clarity in you skin for weeks after not just that da?. "  Please try my concept at Red Lotus Skin Salon.

I love to get facials, so often I pop around town and try different spots out.  Much of the time I get what I pay for and some of the time I get less than I pay for.  When I get a facial,  I have been getting them for 28 years now, I want it all.  A good deep cleaning, some exfoliation by someone who knows the right thing for my skin, not some kid out of school who is guessing and has never apprenticed a day in her or his life.  I want my pores cleaned without leaving marks on my face.  I want to feel the products are really working or they are organic and my skin is drinking them up.  A quicky " hand and slab franchises" will never have the facial I want, so be careful of the latest Groupon.  Go to a salon that has substance and training in their work or...... just expect a fluff and rub.

What are 3D volume eyelash extensions? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon tells you about the simplest way to cut down your getting ready routine.

With traditional lash extensions, we could only safely attach one eyelash extension to each of your single natural lashes. We can only lash on how many natural lashes you have. This can be disappointing if you have not many natural lashes yet desire a thicker look.

Our new 2D , 3D  or 4D Volume sets now give even natural-lash-challenged clients the option for volume they have never had before! Opting more for volume rather than length.

Volume Lashes is a revolutionary lashing technique where 2 to 6 super fine extensions are applied to one single natural eyelash - SAFELY - creating a look so soft and full it seems to be enhanced with Photoshop!

Whatever your lash look, volume lashes are suitable for everyday wear and a real treat on special occasions such as weddings.

What can i do at my facial salon about my rosacea? Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon tells you what to do with your rosacea.

5/14/2015

Picture
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by facial redness, small and superficial dilated blood vessels on facial skin, papules, pustules, and swelling.Rosacea affects all ages and has four subtypes, three affecting the skin and the fourth affecting the eyes (ocular type). Left untreated it worsens over time. Treatment in the form of topical steroids can aggravate the condition. So what can we do about this condition? First, know what triggers your rosacea. For a lot of people these are exercising, alcohol, hot showers or baths, spicy foods or climate in general. While there are some triggers we cannot avoid, such as climate and regular exercise, homecare can be a great help in making the condition more manageable. Skin care management is the most successful results I have seen over the years with Rosacea, which is very common in Oregon.

I consult with clients as to peels and mild progressive facial treatments as well as home care products. Usually within a few month most clients are able to manage their condition so well they stop using medications.
We recommend Anti- Redness serum from PCA Skin.
This unique formulation calms, soothes and improves the appearance of sensitive skin prone to redness.
  • Fast redness reduction for sensitive skin types
  • Instant soothing effect for skin in harsh climates
  • Calms reddened skin post-exercise

We hear the term "over-exfoliating" a lot. This term is used when clients have used exfoliating products too much and have made their skin overly sensitive. This can be exfoliating too much in general or using harsh exfoliants such as scrubs or clarisonic brushes.

In the treatment room, we use enzymes for exfoliation. These are always tailored to your skins needs. Our favorite and most commonly used is JanMarini Skinzyme which can also be incorporated into your at-home skincare routine. Skinzyme helps soften the skin, helps with build up, helps in extraction of blackheads and is gentle enough to use daily.

Am I allergic to eyelash extensions? What can I do for eyelash extension sensitivity? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon talks about Eyelash Sensitivity.

Eyelash extension sensitivity can happen to anyone but there are a few signs before even going to the appointment. Likely, if you are allergic to false eyelashes (strip lashes) or false nails (including shellac), you can be allergic. Darker skin tones are also more likely to be allergic as well as they are usually more allergic to skin care as well.

While these can be warning signs, it does not mean you are but here is how you can prevent it.
Before your appointment, do not wear makeup for 24-48 hours. Makeup can sometimes irritate the eye.
Benadryl is also a good idea, we suggest non drowsy for after the appointment.

We also will teach you a new way to help hydrate the eye and decrease sensitivity while you sleep. If you have had an allergy to eyelash extensions, we recommend going without them for a month or longer to give the eyes time to recuperate. You can reverse sensitivity with lash extension, I have done this personally. Please come in for a consultation as to how to go about this at our salon Red Lotus Skin and Lash.

Aging beautifully, to gray or not to gray......... hair and aging?   At Red Lotus Skin Salon in Beaverton OR,  Master Esthetician Patricia Barnett talks to women about going gray  and would like to share to thoughts from our favorite anti-age perso

Tonya Zavasta talks about graying hair and how to make the process easier.
When are you going to be ready to go naturally gray?
Every woman will have to decide for herself. Going gray is not only a big step for us women, but we've got our loved ones to consider.

My mom and my husband stand adamantly against my going gray. My husband Nick tells me:Don’t go gray. Not yet. He says that now, people may think he’s traipsing about with a “younger woman.” He likes that. When I go gray, the illusion’s over.

But there are exceptions. The model Yasmina Rossi is definitely one of them. When touring for my raw food presentations, I met several gorgeous gray-haired women. When you meet such a woman, you get a strong feeling she must be someone special. She no longer hides her age, she brags about it.

So…to go gray or not? After looking at lots of heads and faces, in person and online, I’ve concluded: Several conditions must be met to make gray hair work for you.

How to Prepare for Gray Hair

First: a good complexion! Gray looks good on a wrinkle-free face. And you can have that face. Wrinkles are optional—provided your sound skincare routine isn’t.

Your first essential practice for a wrinkle-free face: a daily masque application. I put mine on first thing in the morning. I keep it on as long as it takes to tidy up my bed—just two or three minutes will do nicely—then take it off with a masque removing brush.

A green clay masque absorbs excess oil, draws out impurities, and tones the skin. Your masque removing process is as important as the masque application itself. A masque removing brush gives additional exfoliation and instantly makes your skin look fresher. Learn more about exfoliation and many other anti-aging skin care practices in my ebook Guide to an Ageless Face.

Second: full healthy hair. No baldness at the temples. This can be achieved too. But you’ll need give daily attention to your scalp--both hair stimulation and nourishment.

Third: good posture and a slim body. Adding raw foods to your diet will help you achieve yourideal weight and fitness level. See my books for more information.

How to Ease the Transition...The Skunk Period

When it comes to gray, it’s eventually all or nothing. But somewhere in between, for all of us, there’s this challenging period—two different colors on your hair, with a distinct dividing line: the “skunk period.”

If you’re ready to transition right now, this article might help: Transitioning to Gray Hair.

Make the change when you feel comfortable. Pick a moment when you feel excited to open a new chapter in your life.

How to Reverse and Prevent Gray Hair

If you’re dreading it…then you’re just not ready. No problem! If you find yourself at the stage where you'd rather delay all that gray, instead take a look at this article: How to Reverse and Prevent Gray Hair.

Prevention is Easier Than Reversal

Whether we are talking gray hair or a smooth complexion, prevention is always easier than reversal.

Those silver years are coming. The sooner you start preparing, the better.
