The skin barrier serves an important role in protecting us from toxins, bacteria, infection, and other DNA-damaging elements. Today, however, compromised barrier is more prevalent than ever before as a result of our environment, overuse of skin care products with harsh ingredients, medications, autoimmune diseases, and even aggressive professional treatments.
What happens when the barrier becomes compromised? There are a number of challenges that may arise including increased dryness and irritations, susceptibility to bacteria, and even more serious issues like rosacea and acne. With the prevalence of compromised barrier, let’s make 2017 the year for resuscitating the skin.
How do you it? With the right combination of ingredients, professional treatments and proper home care. This two-part blog series will address these core areas starting with the top ingredients for repairing compromised barrier and building strength.

What is the difference between Classic eyelash extensions and Volume eyelash extensions? Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon answers this common question.
Classic Lashes A method where 1 lash extension is glued to 1 natural lash. This method is also known as 1 to 1 or 1:1. Classic lashes are perfect for clients who already have a lot of lashes, but want to add more length. Classic lashes look more natural.
Volume (3D) lashes- When multiple lashes are applied to one single natural eyelash individually isolating one natural eyelash at a time. Using very thin lashes. If two eyelash extensions are applied to one natural lash it’s described as 2D, if three eyelash extensions are applied to one natural eyelash then it’s described as 3D etc.
This method is also known as Russian volume. The lash extensions used in this method are significantly thinner ( Usually a 0.07 diameter lash extension is used) than the lash extensions used for the classic lash method.
Volume lashes are lighter, fluffier and give the client a fuller look. Volume lashes are prefect for clients who don't have a lot of lashes, have sparse lashes, bald spots or just want a more dramatic look without having to use a thicker lash.

A professional treatment will fully cleanse your skin in a way that you simply can't at home. Think about it this way, you brush and floss your teeth twice daily, but you still need to go to the dentist a few times a year for optimal health. Facialists normally utilize a safe and gentle steam to really open your pores and allow them to breathe. It's a don't-try-this-at-home kind of cleansing.

How can I customize my eyelash extensions? Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon talks about how to choose a eyelash extension style that is right for you.
Everything about eyelash extensions is custom and every client is different. Some clients prefer a more natural look while some want them to look as fake as possible. Heaviness and how dramatic they can be depends on the client's lashes: amount, length, health, and natural thickness. Client's who have gaps in their lash lines are also not the best candidate because gapping can be very hard to fill and blend in. If eyelashes are "asymmetrical" meaning one eye has more or they are healthier than the other eye, it can be difficult to make both eyes look the same. For example, clients who have very small, short eyelashes cannot have really thick, heavy lashes because it is not healthy for their natural eyelashes. Lashes that are too heavy can cause breakage and potentially gaps in the lash line from damage.

What is the best way to skin health with facials & peels? Red Lotus skin and lash salon in Beaverton, OR talks about how important skin health is.
Be nice to your skin!Like the heart , stomach , and brain , your skin is an organ. In fact, it’s the largest organ in your body, but it’s still easy to take skin for granted. Unless there’s a problem, you may not think about your skin very much. But skin has an important job to do.
Your skin is constantly protecting you. Your skin keeps infections out of your body and keeps you from getting sick. When you take care of your skin, you’re helping your skin do its job. And taking care of your skin today will help prevent future problems, like wrinkles and even skin cancer. Good skin care also has tremendous social and mental benefits. By looking good it makes a great first impression on others in an interview, a date, or even just making new friends. The mental benefits may even be greater – it keeps you feeling good about yourself. Nothing gives you more self-confidence and an extra bounce in your step more than knowing you look good. Proper skin care, being that skin is the most noticeable part of a person’s body is the #1 way to get that feeling.
There are many different types of skin problems – cosmetic and health and many types of solutions. We will focus on skin problems/treatments for cosmetic purposes. Some of the more common issues are acne scars, age spots, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Some of the more common skin treatments are: laser treatments for laser rejuvenation and laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion, botox (botulinum toxins), dermal fillers, chemical peels among others.
Microdermabrasion works to remove age spots and lighter acne scars. The procedure is one of the favorite wrinkle treatments because it is performed quickly in a facial esthetics office. The physician uses a handheld instrument to spray small crystals onto the surface of the skin. The crystals exfoliate the skin layers, while using suction simultaneously to remove the crystals and dead skin cells. More than one microdermabrasion treatment may be needed for wrinkle removal and other skin treatments it provides.
Chemical peels, also called chemexfoliation or derma-peeling treatments, are cosmetic treatments performed on the face, typically used as an anti-aging solution to rejuvenate the skin. Chemical peels are used to correct skin irregularities in texture, such as fine lines, and color, such as spots caused by sun damage. These peels have varying strengths, characterized by the different kinds of acids used in the applied chemical solution. Chemical-peel solutions use three main acid ingredients to reach varying levels of intensity: alphahydroxy acid (AHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and phenol.
Acne Blue Light Therapy
Acne blue light therapy works by targeting the bacteria that causes acne. Moderate acne that has not responded to other facial skin care treatments can be treated with this light-based therapy, which is administered over a span of several weeks. Acne blue light therapy rarely causes side effects, and does not damage skin.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL™) is a facial rejuvenation treatment that can be used to address the effects of sun damage, heredity, and aging on facial skin. Skin imperfections such as wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, freckles, rosacea, facial veins, brown spots, and enlarged pores can be eliminated or greatly improved withIPL™ Photofacial treatments. There is no “downtime” after the procedure — you can return immediately to your normal daily activities after your IPL™ Photofacial treatment.
What is the best cosmetic treatment for age spots? Red Lotus skin and lash salon in Beaverton, OR talks about how chemical peels can remove age spots.
Chemical peels are a great option for aging spots on the face. As others have mentioned, a TCA peel will help remove the age or sun spot to create a more rejuvenated appearance. The depth of peel varies with the concentration, among other factors. TCA peel treatments may need to be repeated, as necessary. Call us today and our master estheticians, Patricia will help determine the appropriate option for you, and once follow our "pre" and "post" peel instructions. What should I eat to have prettier, younger looking, skin? Red Lotus skincare salon in Portland, Oregon gives you a skin healthy diet guidelines
Many people spend a lot of time slathering on creams and using other products to improve their skin, but a beautiful complexion starts with a healthy skin diet. Like your other organs, your skin needs nourishment to be at its best, too. Along with staying properly hydrated, there are a number of nutrients that can not only impact how healthy you are on the inside, but how you look in the mirror. (And the good news is that you’re probably already meeting these goals if you eat a balanced diet.)
Proper nutrition is a powerful thing, and following the fundamentals of a healthy skin diet is a great way to actually see just how impactful eating right can be. You’ll congratulate yourself on your wise choices every time you catch your reflection.
Often called “the forgotten nutrient,” water is a crucial component of a healthy skin diet, as it rids your body of harmful toxins that can clog your pores. Aim to drink at least eight, 8-ounce glasses over the course of each day. And remember: Sodas, juices, coffee and tea aren’t as powerful as the clear stuff when it comes to nourishing your skin. If you find it hard to down that much plain water, try tossing berries, citrus wedges or cucumber slices into your glass to add subtle flavor.
Partake in Protein
Protein is essential for cellular repair, and because we shed so many skin cells each day, a diet filled with healthy protein ensures that we replenish what we’ve lost and keep the cells we have well fed. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for adult women (ages 19 to 70) is 46 g, while the RDA for men in the same age group is 56 g. Keep in mind, however, that all proteins are not created equal: Skip fatty cuts of red meat and processed meats, like cold cuts and sausage, in favor of eggs, poultry, fish, lean red meat, low-fat dairy products, soy foods, legumes, nuts and seeds.
Get a Daily Dose of Vitamin C
Vitamin C is essential for the formation of collagen–the spongy network of fibers that keeps our skin looking plump and wrinkle-free. Good sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, red peppers, dark green leafy greens like kale and Swiss chard, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries and kiwis. The RDA is 75 mg for adult women and 90 mg for adult men, and most adults meet this goal without trouble.
Zap Problem Spots with Zinc
Zinc is involved in wound healing and the formation of new collagen, and it plays an especially important role in minimizing the inflammation that causes acne. While zinc is available in supplement form, there are plenty of good food sources of zinc, including oysters, legumes, nuts, seeds, oatmeal, poultry, wheat bran and wheat germ. Most people easily get enough zinc in their diet (the RDA for adult women is 8 mg, 11 mg for men), although vegetarians often fall short.
Antioxidant-rich foods protect collagen and inhibit the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. They also improve the overall appearance of skin, speed skin’s ability to repair itself and protect against further damage from elements, like sun and wind. To get an array of antioxidants (such as the important vitamins C, A and E, and the minerals zinc and selenium) into your diet, aim to eat six or more servings of vegetables each day and two or more servings of fruit. Darker fruits and vegetables tend to contain the most antioxidants, so choose richly-colored options like dark green leafy greens, broccoli, blueberries, cantaloupe, pink grapefruit, red peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, plums, red grapes, beets and tomatoes. You may consider visiting your local farmers’ market all year long to find a great variety of fresh, seasonal produce.
Help Yourself to Healthy Fats
Monounsaturated fats and essential fatty acids help to keep skin moisturized from the inside out by absorbing fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Many monounsaturated fats also contain vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant. Goods sources of monounsaturated fats include extra virgin olive oil, grape seed oil, avocados, raw or dry roasted nuts, seeds and natural nut butters. Fatty fish such as salmon, trout, Arctic char and sardines, as well as ground flaxseed, Brazil nuts, walnuts and pumpkin seeds, are good fatty acid-rich picks.
In conjunction with regular facials and great products, eating right and stating hydrated can make you not only look younger but feel younger as well.
What are the do's & don't of lash extensions? Red Lotus Skin and Lash Salon in Beaverton,Oregon talks about lash longevity & maintenance.
Here's Advice for Lash Newbies:
DO your research
Choose a reputable salon, spa or eyelash extension only establishment. The lash artist should be a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist and the consultation should be free of charge. Ask what type adhesive is used (it should be non-formaldehyde) We use______ which is non-formaldehyde, We here at Red Lotus have lash training on top of aesthetic licenses.
DON'T get your extensions wet for 24 to 48 hours after application
"Avoid working out, steam rooms or hot yoga. The adhesive will reactivate and may cause the lashes to stick together and look like caked-on mascara."
DO resist the urge to pull
"If you pick, tug, twist or excessively touch or brush your extensions, it could damage your natural lashes. If at any time you don't wish to continue, always have them professionally removed."
DON'T let moisture-rich products get onto your lashes
"Shampoo, conditioner, heavy creams or anything oil based will eventually loosen the bond. Tilt your head back when washing your hair or take a bath to avoid getting them wet. Some of my addicted clients use swimming goggles while showering!"
DO reshape your extensions after you shower
"Gently comb your lashes to fan them out or use a blow dryer set on "cool" to fan them back in place. Hold it arms length away from your face."
DON'T neglect your own lashes
"Maintain the health of your natural lashes with an eyelash conditioner or growth serum. They help the hairs to stay in the follicle longer resulting in stronger support for the extensions."
DO have fun
"Flaunt! Flirt! The best thing about lash extensions is that they are versatile and can be styled differently at every touch up appointment. For example, if you're going to Vegas, ask your lash artist to glam 'em up!"
Voila! Now you know what you're getting into. I'll admit, some of these tips sound a bit high-maintenance, but if you're going to spend $200 bucks or more on your service, you want to make sure it lasts.

Lash extensions can last through a full growth cycle of natural eyelashes, typically six to eight weeks (before every single lash has come off your eye). That said, because each person's lash growth is somewhat variable (just hair growth), I suggest light lash maintenance every two to three weeks to maintain a full look.
Simple guidelines will be presented at that appointment to help you maintain and get the best out of your lashes.

Compromised barrier function is more common than ever due to many contributing factors including our environment, overuse of skin care products containing harsh ingredients, aggressive professional treatments, allergies, medications and even autoimmune diseases. Compromised barrier function can lead to increased irritations, dryness, increased susceptibility to bacteria and worse, if left untreated. Rosacea and Acne also fall into this category with the inflammation and over exposed epidermis layer of skin.
