How to get your skin to firm up and brighten up. Why is Vitamin- C important in a home care routine? Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon talks about a key step you could be missing in your routine.
The body is smart and no matter how much vitamin c you eat you skin barely gets any. But when applies topically with a fat and water soluble product vitamin c firm and tightens the muscles for up to 2 weeks on the face. This is just one effect on the skin and how the importance of vitamin c supports our skin daily? The antioxidant properties of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and its role in collagen synthesis make vitamin C a vital molecule for skin health. Dietary and topical ascorbic acid have beneficial effects on skin cells, and some studies have shown that vitamin C may help prevent and treat ultraviolet (UV)-induced photodamage.

What can i do about the dark circles under my eyes? Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon talks about what to do when you see dark circles.
There are 3 things that can be blamed for under eye circles:
Genetics are the biggest culprit. If you inherit fair or thin skin under the eyes, it’s more obvious when blood pools there (often because of slower circulation from lack of sleep). This accumulation causes fragile capillaries to stretch and leak.
Age is another factor. Over time, skin loses collagen and thins, so veins show through more prominently. Sunbathing speeds up this process by breaking down collagen and mottling skin color.
Seasonal allergies are to blame for many people. “They trigger the release of histamines in the body, which in turn inflame blood vessels and cause swelling,” says Ranella Hirsch, a dermatologist in Boston. To determine why your circles happen, gently stretch the skin under your eyes. If that area becomes darker, the circles are probably due to genetics or aging. If the color doesn’t change, UV rays or allergies are probably the cause.
Now what can we do about it? First, improving sleep. 7-9 hours is what the average person needs. Do this for a few weeks and see if the darkness improves.
As for product recommendations , we recommend JanMarini Dark Circle Eye Defense.

Picking the best moisturizer for oily skin is difficult when you have oily skin, most oily skin clients do not even want moisturizer but they are incorrect. According to master aesthetician, Patricia at Red Lotus skin peel salon in Beaverton.
Skin that is oily and greasy can be really balanced out and made to be much more matte with the right type of moisture product. Surprisingly, skin can become even greasier with routines that use strong cleansing and no moisture. The sebaceous glands become overactive with no ph balancing ingredients, you will even notice a film of oil all over your skin that will just wipe away when you wake up in the morning. By hydrating with a light moisturizer, like the ones I have listed you will avoid this and wake up with balanced oil and a healthy glow.
I choose one with natural ingredients like clearskin by PCA skin inc. This light, hydrating 4% niacinamide formulation contains antioxidants and provides exceptional calming benefits to oily and breakout-prone skin. This advanced hydrator also includes vitamin A, marigold, butcher's broom and cucumber extracts, and promotes a bright, clear complexion.
Rebalance from PCA skin Inc. This nourishing, light nighttime moisturizer hydrates, calms and soothes normal to oily skin.
* Borage Seed Oil – is a calming ingredient that is an excellent source of the omega-6 essential fatty acid (EFA) gamma linolenic acid (GLA).
* Evening Primrose Seed Oil – is a calming ingredient that is an excellent source of GLA.
* Tocopherol (vitamin E) – is a fat-soluble antioxidant vitamins and emollient ingredient.
* Panthenol (pro-vitamin B-5) – hydrates the skin.
Moisturizing is an important step in anyone's routine, including acne and oilier skin types. But picking the right moisturizer is important because different skins require different moisturizing, great moisturizers also don't have to cost you an arm and a leg.
Our favorite moisturizers are by PCA Skin.
Clear Skin & ReBalance by PCA is a very lightweight moisturizer. They hydrate, calm and soothe the skin.
Silkcoat Balm is a richer moisturizer with antioxidants, botanicals, and hydrolyzed silk for dry and mature skin types. Clients in harsh weather climates like this one as well. Along with homecare, getting a hydrating organic facial is also a good remedy for dryer skin types.

Dark circles under your eyes, fine lines, saggy eyelids or just dry skin around eye area.....this is why eye cream is important. Do I need an eye cream in my routine? Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon talks about eye creams.
We have all heard people say that you need to start using eye creams when you turn 20, but are eye creams just more expensive moisturizer in a smaller package?
No. In actuality, eye creams are formulated special for that tissue around the eye. The skin around your eye is very delicate and thinner than the skin on your cheeks for example. Eye creams contain more ingredients to target the problems we usually see in the eye area. The skin around the eye is thinner which means it is more prone to dryness and more likely to show age quicker. Squinting and constant movement of the eyes also hasten the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and fluids collect under the eyes and cause puffiness and dark circles. Eye creams can address some of these issues.
Fine lines and wrinkles come from both sun damage and your skin making less collagen as you age. Collagen helps maintain skin's elasticity. Vitamin C, peptides, and retinol have boosted collagen production, studies of skin creams show. Ceramide and hyaluronic acid also help; these are moisturizers that help prevent water loss in the skin and improve elasticity. I recommend Rhonda Allison eye sample trio which give you a sample of 3 different types of eye cream product for a variety of needs for you eyes, They come in sample sizes to support a low cost chance to try top of the line stuff and after a month worth of products you can truly make a good purchase decision you will love for your eyes.
Eye Revitalize by Rhonda Allison for circulations and firming, this also assists dark eye circles. Eye & Lip Renew Serum for dryness and removing lines. 3-n-1 eye peptide cream by Rhonda Allison

Lip & Eye repair by Rhonda Allison
EYE & LIP RENEW SERUM This unique and exotic serum melts into delicate eye tissue (above and under eyes) and transforms eyes to a more dewy, youthful, softened appearance. Notice a remarkable difference in 30 days of continued use. Watch eyelids become less dry and coarse and see fine lines diminish. You will never be without this once you try it! Eyes reveal the beauty within – don’t let them reveal your age.
PEPTIDE 3-N-1 EYE CREAM With antioxidant properties, this light, age-defying eye blend will reduce puffy eyes, brighten tired, dull tissue, and minimize fine lines while giving eyes a boost of moisture. Peptide 3-N-1 Eye Cream provides a superior combination of ingredients, including a complex of peptides that repair, detoxify, and minimize wrinkles, provide anti-inflammatory benefits, and work as matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors (MMPIs).

Is it safe to get lash extensions during pregnancy? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon tells you what to do if you want eyelash extensions while pregnant.
A popular question that arises is "can I get lash extensions while pregnant?" There are a few things to consider.
How far along in your pregnancy are you? Any pregnant lady will tell you how hard it is to lay comfortably, especially on their back.
The other reason is because pregnancy changes hormone levels which in turn can make you hypersensitive to things you've never had a problem with before.Even a patch test is not ok, because if a reaction was to occur the medication needed cannot be taken during pregnancy. Hormones also affect lash retention, so they won’t last anyway. Every woman is different but listen to you body. Lashes my be great way to have a moment to yourself or a nap once a month while you have your fills, the look of lash extensions will feel beautiful and finally easy after baby because of one less step in looking amazing daily. How do I pick a good place to get new lash extensions, lash fills or lash technician? Who can I trust with my eyes? Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon is certified in classic lash extensions and 3D volume eyelash extensions.
Do your research before you let someone apply lash extensions to you. Why is it so important to make sure they are certified? Would you want someone applying something to your eyelids with two sharp tweezers without any training? We wouldn't!
Finding a good lash technician is really not hard work. Take your time and read reviews from places in your area, ask around and see if anyone has tried them out and what they thought of their experience. If someone tells you that they experienced burning, itching or irritation during the procedure, I would advise you not to see them. There should be no irritation at all during the procedure.
After you have done your research and found a place you are interested in, call and ask to schedule a consultation. This will be your time to ask any questions you may have and look at their work. Sometimes websites will have frequently asked questions and their work so you can see it online.

How do I clean my eyelash extensions? Why is proper care for my eyelashes so important? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon talks about how cleaning your lashes is the most important aftercare.
Keeping your eyelashes clean is so very important! Not only will they look better (nasty, caked-up, dirty lashes are never a good look!) but also they will last longer and will protect the health of your eyes. Often I hear that a client thinks......“I’m scared to clean my lashes, I don’t want them to fall out!!” The fact is, if you DON’T clean your lashes you will lose them sooner anyway! Our skin secretes oil and as your lash tech will have told you, oil is one of the main things that will cause premature lash loss. Also, we all have microscopic parasites which live happily on our lashes (Demodex Folliculorum) which are completely harmless. However, an excessive number of mites in the lash follicles caused by poor hygiene will usually result in the eyelash falling out. Constant neglect of your lashes will result in increased sensitivity and a higher chance of allergic reactions. Unfortunately, if you develop a sensitivity to the lash adhesive it is very unlikely you will ever be able to wear extensions again according to most, however I have developed a techniques to overcome glue sensitivity and have actually done it myself.
At a VERY MINIMUM:
Give your lashes a daily wash with a very simple baby shampoo formula that you can email us for, cup up to your eyes warm water to rinse and a gentle brush through with a mascara spoolie…
It’s a very simple but effective way of removing light debris and dust from the lashes on a daily basis.
At LEAST once a day and some may need twice to get in there and clean those lashes!
Here’s the recipe:
1 part baby shampoo
3 parts bottled/distilled water
1 teaspoon of baking soda
The baking soda regulates pH and neutralizes impurities.
~ Using a foam pump dispenser, pump your chosen cleanser onto your hand and smother your lashes.
Gently work the foam into the lashes.
~ Lint free flocked applicators (disposable lip make up applicators) are fab for thorough removal of make up along the lash line.
~ Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
~ Using your fingers gently wipe the lashes in an upward direction while blinking gently to remove excess water.
~ Pat dry your face, (DON'T RUB) but avoid your eyes.
~ Leave to naturally dry or use a hair dryer on it’s minimum COOL setting.
~ Use a CLEAN dry mascara spoolie to GENTLY brush through the lashes to make them neat and fluffy again, being careful not to drag the brush through the base of the lashes.
DO NOT use mascara!
Respect your lashes and your eyes and you can continue to wear beautiful lash extensions for years to come!

Can I get lash extensions if I have hooded eyelids? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon has answers for you.
Eyes come in many different sizes and shapes. Hooded eyelids are ones that i get questions about the most. A hooded eyelid makes it so natural eyelashes can be hard to see especially if the natural lashes are short. Eyelash extensions can be used to make the eyes pop. Eyelash extensions also come in a variety of curls so they will extend over the eyelid and cover up straight eyelashes.
Kidney and Bladder cleansing with massage therapist, Aumkara Newhouse at Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon
Dehydration warning! Winter is kidney and bladder cleansing time
In Oriental medicine winter is kidney and bladder Life Force cleansing time and many of my clients are coming in dehydrated with sore kidney/bladder points in feet and calves. Warm clearish liquids such as decaf green tea, brothy soup such as miso with seaweed -careful - not too many minerals or too much salt as the kidneys are cleansing and extra minerals may not help and can actually decrease vitality. Yet some person do need the minerals so try step by step to see what helps you.
This can also result in cold feet - part of the fight and flight response. Extremities get less blood in fight and flight because they are most likely to be injured so the body reduces flow via muscle tension in the little muscles around the capillaries and the bigger muscles as time goes on in fight and flight then they lock. This give very sore very tight calves. Many chronic diseases have this as a symptom.
A small amount of Peanut oil rubbed into the calves can also help with muscle soreness.
The bladder meridian starts on the bridge of the nose and goes over the top of the head, so headaches are also associated with dehydration in this way.
Life Force is most active in the Bladder from 3-5:00 pm and the Kidney from 5-7:00 pm. These are Key times to increase water intake and, for many persons, also electrolytes. Chewing your water and any liquid will mix it with amylase; a digestive enzyme found only in saliva that will dramatically increase waters absorptivity and bio-availability.
Finally, each tooth pair top and bottom has a meridian associated with it. So if you are having issues with a particular organ, check the tooth and for scars. Here is a website with a chart to show which teeth are involved. http://www.meridiantoothchart.com/tooth_charts.html
When is the right time to get a skin peels or chemical peel? Slough off that dry winter skin at Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon.
Chemical peels are essential for having beautiful skin as well as home care products. The best time to get a peel is during the colder months. After having a peel, we tell you not to get hot or sweat because this can cause negative side effects such as pigmentation or blistering. Get your peel before the summer and make sure to wear plenty of sunblock!
Peels can take around 45 minutes, so you can even come on your lunch hour.
What effects can chemotherapy have on the skin? Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon talks about skin care during chemotherapy.
Having to undergo chemotherapy is a challenge in itself but some of the drugs that are necessary to treat the cancer can bring their own set of challenges to the skin. We recommend at Red Lotus Skin Care in Beaverton, a lot of relaxing to help the body and facial and massage can be your retreat away from all the pain. Things that are gentle and soothing to the nervous system are important and healing. Also, talk with your aesthetician, he or she will have excellent healing salves for burned or irritated skin that you can help with burned or blister skin after treatments of radiation.
Here are some key points:
* Widespread skin dryness and papulopustular rash (acne like) are known skin side effects of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors. These inhibitors include cetuximab, erlotinib, gefitinib, lapatinib, panitumumab. EGFR eruptions do not have comedones, instead they present at a rash and their severity is related to improved tumor response and survival.
*A side effect called hand foot syndrome because it most commonly occurs on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet occurs in 30-60% of patients. If you develop these symptoms be sure to advise your doctors so it can be managed.
In mild to moderate hand-foot syndrome, the following symptoms may occur on the palms of the hands and/or the soles of the feet:
Redness (similar to a sunburn)
A sensation of tingling or burning
Tenderness (sensitive to touch)
Tightness of the skin
Thick calluses and blisters on the palms and soles
Symptoms of severe hand-foot syndrome include:
Cracked, flaking, or peeling skin
Blisters, ulcers, or sores on the skin
Difficulty walking or using the hands
*Paronychia, an infection that occurs around the nails, affects 10-30% of those receiving EGRF inhibitor therapy.
*Cranial radiation therapy and neuroleptic drugs, (antipsychotic drugs that are now being used to treat other disorders), can trigger a variety of skin rashes.
*Studies have shown that hydration, antimicrobials, sterile tissue, protective ointment, and specific dermatological therapies can reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It is important to be aware of and manage skin dryness and see dermatologist if there are signs of peeling, blistering, bleeding or pain. Your dermatologist or aesthetician may be able to provide you with skin care products with ingredients that have been shown to be helpful in research studies. These ingredients include: calendula, corticosteroids, topical sodium hyaluronate, urea and allantoin. Plain, non-scented, lanolin-free hydrophilic (water based hydrating) creams may help prevent radiation skin reactions.
Is my lack of sleep having negative side effects on my skin? Your lack of sleep can be causing your skin to look tired and dull.
Red Lotus Skin Salon is all about the relaxations and sleep is a big deal to your beauty. " I can always tell when clients are stressed and not getting enough sleep. Thing like acne, cysts, bags under the eyes, dull lifeless skin or no color at all in the skin are just a few of the signs. Say's master aesthetician Patricia, at Red Lotus in Portland, Oregon.
Yes, your sleep problems can be causing skin problems. Sleep is our time to internally refresh, restore and heal. Anything that interrupts this process can lead to the skin looking less than its best. All of us have gotten up and looked in the mirror after a bad night’s sleep and noted the dark under-eye circles and the dull cast to the skin. The bad sleep and the diminished skin appearance are directly related.
Inadequate sleep: whether it is odd working hours, stress, a baby in the house, insomnia, or anything else that prevents us from sleeping, it is going to result in daytime tiredness, under eye circles and a dull cast to the skin. We can slather on all the lotions and potions we want, but if we do not address the problem it will not get any better.
If you do shift work, try to create an environment where you can get maximum rest when you do get to sleep. Consider a device that will create white noise and blank out the potentially interruptive sounds.
Sleep: Is my lack of sleep having negative side effects on my skin? Your lack of sleep can be causing your skin to look tired and dull.we all know the hazards but often do not think about them showing up on the skin. Each of us needs to find ways to deal with the stresses in our life and there are a lot of them. Family, babies, marriage, divorce, work, bills, friends, all can be stressful. Even exercise or a change in routine can be stressful to the body and it will need time to adapt. Stress affects our hormone levels which affects about everything else. Be prepared with your little emergency kit if stress triggers skin breakouts. Try some form of meditation or relaxation to reduce stress before you go to bed to sleep better. Yes, that cup of herbal tea is a more restful nightcap than anything else. No caffeine of any form including sodas or chocolate for 4 hours prior to bedtime also is a great help.
Baby: It’s nothing new that a baby in the house will mess with your sleep. So what is a mom supposed to do? Go with the flow. If you are at home with the child, the best answer is probably napping. When you put the baby down, take a power nap. This may help you feel more refreshed and rested in the evening when the rest of your family is home and hoping for a bit of companionship and a meal. If you are back at work and napping when baby does isn't an option, try catching a power nap at lunch. Learn to do a bit of self-hypnosis and you can feel rested and refreshed in 15 minutes.
Snoring: Snoring loudly enough to wake yourself or your partner may mean sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can be a potentially life threatening disorder if untreated. During the sleep cycle breathing stops and starts multiple times. Women may or may not suffer from loud snoring but still have sleep apnea. The problem with sleep apnea is the interrupted breathing means that the brain is not getting its routine oxygen supply. This is what can lead to some pretty nasty health problems. Here is a listing of the symptoms and information from the Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sleep-apnea/basics/symptoms/con-20020286
Learning and treating this I can avoid the health problems and wake up refreshed in the morning.
What should I know before getting lash extensions? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon lets you in on what to expect before heading to the salon.
Today we are sharing some of our frequently asked questions about lash extensions.
How long does it take to apply lash extensions?
Appointments take about 2 hours depending on the set of natural lashes. Lashes that are weak or short cannot handle a huge set like Kim Kardashian's for example, so the times can vary between people.
Can glue get in my eye?
Your eyes are closed throughout the whole two hours. However, if your eye is sensitive to the glue, it can cause some irritation and you should tell the technician immediately.
How often do i need to get my extensions touched up?
I recommend around 2-3 weeks. After the three weeks, they are usually getting sparse and your regular touch up appointment may run longer. Fill appointments take 45 minutes to one hour.
Do the lash extensions fall out after a certian period of time?
Yes, the eyelash extensions fall out with your natural lashes. On average, we lose 2-3 lashes per day. Most of the time we do not notice losing our natural eyelashes but you can notice more with the extensions.
Finally, what questions should you ask the technician before having lash extension applied?
Make sure your tech is trained and certified. Ask if they have had hands on training, how long they have been practicing and ask to see pictures of their work. Red Lotus is certified in classic and volume lash extensions.
For more information please see our lash extensions page.
Are you suffering from dry, cracking hands or skin in general ? We have some tips from Master Aesthetician Patricia Barnett for you at Red Lotus skincare salon in Portland, OR
Chemicals and not enough natural oil are the main reason for sensitive, dry and cracking skin. Eliminate this by wearing gloves in extreme circumstances and switch your dish washing soap to something more organic and gentle on the hands. One with less chemicals that you can get at an organic grocery store. Coconut oil is a effective and simple way to moisturize the hands whenever you are done with dish washing as well as eating a spoon or in you coffee or tea to give your body the needed raw fats it requires daily.
There are many misconceptions about products that are termed moisturizers – the word alone implies moisture (water), which is crucial for all skin regardless of skin type. However, a person with dry skin may require a moisturizer that has a thick creamy feel but remains on the skin. Does this mean the skin is receiving water hydration beyond the surface? Someone with oily skin will shy away from moisturizers because of the heavy, greasy feel he or she doesn’t want and is actually trying to eliminate. Does this mean then that an oily skin does best without a moisturizer?
Decades of marketing have influenced our understanding of the purpose of a moisturizer – if it is laying on the surface, how will it possibly be providing water hydration that retains itself in the epidermis?
Rhonda Allison moisture and protection nutrients are designed to absorb and provide valuable hydration and plumping of the skin beyond the surface. It is important to educate clients about a topical that does not stay on the surface, but is actually feeding the skin and giving it just the right balance of moisture.
Are toners good for your skin? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon talks about why toner should be in your skin care routine.
Toners are a very general term, meaning to do just that re-balance and tone the texture of the skin. Master aesthetician, Patricia Barnett at Red Lotus skin peel salon talks about how toners are not all the same and very skin specific to improving the skin texture.
"Many clients ask if they should use a tone and that the heard toners dry the skin. This can be the case but lets take a more specific look at this question. When I was young toners were very general. Most were Witch Hazel or Alcohol based. But now we have toners made with wonderful blends of acids to refine texture and exfoliate. We have toners made with herbal blends for acne as well like green tea and pumpkin extract. Some are hydrating toners like cucumber and heavy waters to add tons of moisture and clean the skin at the same time. It is so important to know what is in you toner to know if it is right for your skin, ask your aesthetician to help you know the ingredients. But stay away from alcohol based products they do very little if not actually create problems. I love, for most all skin types, is Rhonda Allison's toner line. She offers at least 6 different types of ingredient blends to help dry skin, pigmented skin, acne skin , red skin and oily skin. They have acids blended in them as well and can be the perfect daily cleaning solution. Great on a budget too."
Here is one we recommend:

New sheer tint finisher by Rhonda Allison. Takes the place of foundation and it will not break you out for a great price and available for purchase at Red Lotus Skincare Salon in Beaverton, Oregon!
Why do foundations break your skin out? You could be sensitive to ingredients in your foundation, causing your skin to break out?
There are certain ingredients lurking in the makeup and sunscreen you're slathering on that are causing you to break out. Now this does not mean you have to get rid of your foundation (scary, we know) or stop applying SPF (do not do this), but you do need to keep a watchful eye on product labels because the ingredients that make you break out, can be hidden in your makeup.
KNOWN ACNE OFFENDERS:
• Artificial Color -- Look for FD&C in the ingredients list, which means the product has artificial color. This can irritate the skin and if it's in your lipstick or blush, it can cause breakouts around your mouth or on your cheeks.
• Lanolin -- This is basically the fancy term for sheep sebum (sebum = oil) and while it can be good for dry skin, it's not right for acne-prone skin.
• Mineral Oil -- This forms a film on your skin, trapping dead skin cells and bacteria (prime causes of acne) and it can also give you milia, those tiny white bumps on your skin.
• Petroleum -- This is oil, and as you may have guessed, you don't really need to be putting more oil on your face.
• Isopropyl Myristate -- This can actually make your skin feel less greasy, but it also clogs pores and causes skin irritation.
• Artificial Fragrance -- This can irritate your skin and cause breakouts. Try to use as many fragrance free products as possible.
