"I began having a lot of acne on my forehead and small breakouts elsewhere on my face when I was about 6 weeks pregnant. I tried several things without success and finally sought out Patricia from Red Lotus, upon seeing her amazing reviews online. After one facial my skin completely cleared up and my skin was no longer oily. I consistently used the products she gave me and got another facial a month or so later. I am now 36 weeks pregnant and still incredibly happy with the skincare line and how my skin looks and feels. I have maintained clear, soft skin throughout my pregnancy!" ~ Nicole Cohen
Papaya is the best bet when it comes to skin care. It is a good source of Vitamin A and papain. Vitamin A acts as an anti-oxidant, while the papain breaks down inactive proteins and removes dead skin cells. The best feature of the fruit is its low sodium quality. Since the salt content is less, the water retention is also little. The result is an overall hydrated skin.

How often should I be getting massage for stress and sleeplessness? Red Lotus in Portland, OR talks about it.Read Now
Massages are not only important for relaxation, they have many other benefits as well. At Red Lotus in Beaverton,Oregon we have two massage therapists that will help you with any need.
Once people discover the many joys and benefits of massage, a common question arises — "How often should I schedule my massage sessions?" Of course, there is no set answer, but studies indicate that massage at regular intervals is most beneficial to your overall health.
"A weekly massage may seem an indulgence, but new research suggests it can have major health benefits....
"Since instituting a program of massage, job-specific exercises and ergonomics in 1990, the Virginia-based company [Wampler Foods] has cut repetitive-stress injuries by 75 percent....
"From assembly lines to corporate headquarters, Americans are discovering the magic of massage. At Boeing and Reebok, headaches, back strain and fatigue have all fallen since the companies started bringing in massage therapists . . . Doctors have started prescribing massage to help patients manage stress and pain. And a few HMO's have begun sharing in the cost. ‘Massage is medicine, not merely an indulgence,’ says Laura Favin of Not Just a Luxury Onsite Massage in New York....
"Scientists are now finding that massage can reduce blood pressure, boost the immune system, dampen harmful stress hormones and raise mood-elevating brain chemicals such as serotonin. And you can’t beat massage for relaxation. Babies fall asleep faster when massaged than when rocked — and they stay asleep, rather than waking the moment Mom tiptoes away. All these factors, says Tiffany Field, founder of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami’s School of Medicine, ‘put massage in the same category with proper diet and exercise as something that helps maintain overall health.’ ...
"The effects aren't always so straightforward. Massage can also stimulate nerves that carry signals from the skin to the brain, triggering changes throughout the body.... Field showed that massage (as opposed to light touch) stimulates the brain’s vagus nerve, causing the secretion of food-absorption hormones, including insulin. Nerve stimulation probably explains other benefits as well.... Dr. James Dillard of Columbia University [says], ‘Every nerve cell in the body has some connection to every other nerve cell.’ ...
"Like exercise, massage does more for you if you engage in it regularly... even a monthly treatment can help maintain general health. ‘Touch is basic to survival,’ says Elliot Greene, past president of AMTA [American Massage Therapy Assn.]. That’s all the excuse anyone should need to indulge."
Remember, your body strives to maintain optimum health by keeping all of its systems in balance. Along with proper nutrition, exercise and rest, massage relaxes tense muscles and stimulates the body’s communication lines to help it do its job — and to keep you feeling your best. So, make regular massage a priority in your life, not just for your relaxation needs but your overall health.

Can I use mascara with my lash extensions? Red Lotus in Beaverton, Oregon talks about why you should rethink putting mascara on your lash extensions.Read Now
Eyelash extensions should be handled with delicate care to ensure they will last until the natural lash sheds. The lash technician at Red Lotus Lash in Beaverton, Oregon tells us why we should be cautious of what we put on our 3D eyelash extensions.
The subject of using mascara with eyelash extensions is controversial. Some places say you can and some people strongly discourage it. I am one of the people that strongly discourages you to put mascara on lash extensions and i will tell you why.
First off, most people do not feel the need to wear mascara with 3D volume lash extensions because they give an effect that no mascara can. The beautiful, fanned out volume with no clumping or lashes sticking together.
Mascara can ruin lash extensions. Any mascara especially waterproof or oil based mascara can dissolve the bonds on the lashes causing them to stick together.
Mascara applied at the roots can also build up and create gunk that is difficult to remove and makes the extensions clumpy. Not cute!
However, clients can wear mascara on the bottom lashes as long as it is water based and removed with delicate care and a oil free makeup remover.
I have heard of places telling you that you can apply mascara to the tips of the extensions. However, I find that when clients do this it makes the extensions stick together and causing the perfect fanning of the lashes to become clumpy and take on the appearance of a very thick lash.
So in conclusion, I would say do not put mascara on your lash extensions. It is better for the overall health and it makes them look dirty and unnatural.

Getting chemical peels in the winter can help with get rid of that dry, winter skin. Red Lotus Skincare Salon in Portland, Oregon specializes in skin peels from PCA Skin and Rhonda Allison.Read Now
Are you ready to peel away the winter dryness? Reveal what is underneath your dry skin and restore your glow with a chemical peel. In the wintertime there is less moisture in the air which is a cause for dry skin, as well as the low temperatures and the cold winter wind. Rosacea and eczema can also flare up in the winter due to dry skin. A chemical peel can address these problems with exfoliation and hydration.
What is a chemical peel and how does it work? –A chemical peel is a procedure that accelerates skin turnover and speeds pigment reduction, resulting in healthier skin and a more uniform complexion. It is a quick way to remove dead skin cells, fine lines, small scars, freckles, dark spots and/or skin imperfections caused by aging and hormones. Because peels slough off those unwanted dead skin cells, and force brand new fresh skin to the surface, it gives you the appearance of tighter, brighter skin and smaller pores.
What are the benefits of a chemical peel? – A chemical peel reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improves skin color, clarity and texture. It enhances skin glow and radiance by inducing production of new collagen and stimulating new healthy skin cell growth. Melasma, common in younger women, can be improved, along with discoloration and pigmentation. A chemical peel also addresses visible skin imperfections and scarring.
Why is winter a good time for chemical peels?- The weather is on your side with less sunlight, which means lower UV levels and a perfect environment to heal your skin more quickly. Winter is one of the best times of year to help correct a variety of skin concerns that you may have with a chemical peel. Have a peel now to exfoliate and refresh your skin or have a series to significantly improve your skin before next summer. The benefit from a series of 4 to 6 peels is that it targets the deeper layers of the epidermis for enhanced exfoliation and cellular turnover which produces healthy, glowing skin. Also, hyper pigmentation is better improved by a series of chemical peels. In order to allow your skin to heal between treatments, a series of peels are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Patricia Barnett at Red Lotus Skincare Salon in Portland, Oregon can identify the right chemical peel for your skin type and skin care goals. After your treatment, we will recommend the appropriate skin care products for your skin type.

Is it safe to get 3D lash extensions while pregnant? The certified lash technician at Red Lotus Lash Salon in Beaverton, Oregon has information on what to do if you are pregnant but want lash extensions.Read Now
Pregnancy is an incredibly vulnerable time. The body goes through many changes that can be both startling and unnerving and expecting moms often question the safety of everything that goes in or on their bodies. This can also include things that were or are part of their normal beauty routine. Are you an expecting mom wondering are eyelash extensions safe during pregnancy and, have been unable to find the answers? Well, you don’t have to look any further because whether you are considering silk or mink eyelash extensions or simply trying to avoid gobs of makeup during warm summer months and contemplating natural looking false eyelashes, we have you covered with our explanation.
All lash extensions are typically applied via a simple adhesion process with eyelash extension glue. Now, this glue can come in all sorts of formulations and each manufacturer is likely a little bit different. While typically safe, because of the hormonal changes experienced by a pregnant woman, you may find that your tolerance for some everyday products ends in irritation, even if you have not experienced it before. This does not need to leave you wondering “are eyelash extensions safe?” however, because more than likely this irritation will be temporary and does not indicate a safety concern, simply that your pregnant and changing body does not like something about the chemical composition of the glue. And, in all likelihood, after you welcome your new baby into the world, you might find that the same product that caused you grief during your trimesters is suitable and fine after delivery. So, if this happens to you, you can consider switching brands or simply removing eyelash extensions during your pregnancy.
Pregnancy is a beautiful and sensitive time, and adding glamour and doing things for yourself like enhancing your appearance can boost your self esteem and build confidence. Generally safe and well tolerated, if you can afford high quality eyelash extensions and manage a bit more hair during hot months, they can add style and drama to your new mom look! In fact, more and more new moms are raving about the convenience of having mink lash extensions applied instead of time-consuming daily mascara applications and removals. One monthly trip to a beauty salon (every mom needs a “me” time!) will help eliminate tired eyes and look your best effortlessly.

What causes acne scars and can chemical peels help me? Red Lotus Skincare in Portland, Oregon has answers for you.Read Now
Not all acne turns into acne scars, normally inflamed acne causes scarring. The more inflamed, the more likely to scar. The inflammation occurs on the epidermis and the dermis. The dermis is the second layer and is where the oil glands, collagen, hair follicles, nerves and blood vessels are. If the dermis is damaged, you get scarring. The cyst or pustule ruptures and the pus inside accumulates and gets bigger as it swells. The pimple then ruptures and the pus is spread through the dermis, causing damage. Then the body has to make collagen to repair the damaged tissue.
Now where do chemical peels tie in here? Chemical peels can decrease the appearance of the scarring. We are not saying you will be completely relieved of the damage but they will be not nearly as noticeable.

There is a large market of oils to choose from but that choice is one of the most important parts of receiving the full benefit from essential oils, using only pure therapeutic grade oils will insure you are receiving the most benefit from each oil used. Do not believe everything you hear about eyelash extensions!
MYTH: Eyelash extensions make your natural lashes fall out
FACT: Your eyelashes are constantly growing and shedding, just like the hair on your head. An eyelash has a finite life of 60-90 days. They are supposed to fall out. Since they are at different stages of the growth cycle, most people lose 1-3 natural lashes per day on average and never notice it because lashes are so small. Properly applied eyelash extensions do not affect this natural growth cycle but you may notice the shedding more than before because your lashes are darker and thicker with the extensions attached.
MYTH: When my eyelash extensions came out, my natural lashes came with them.
FACT: In actuality, the reverse is happening: when your natural lashes grew out, they took the extensions with them! If good adhesive is used and proper technique is applied, eyelash extensions are designed to stay adhered to the natural lash until it grows out. If you are seeing eyelash extension shedding and your natural lash is not still attached to the extension, you are losing your extensions prematurely and should consult with your stylist as to the cause.
MYTH: Eyelash extensions hurt.
FACT: If eyelash extensions are applied properly, you should not feel anything at all. If your eyelash extensions are hurting, something is wrong with your lash application and you need to call your technician.
MYTH: I had eyelash extensions for awhile and after I had them removed, my natural lashes were shorter.
FACT: Properly applied eyelash extensions do not affect the growth of natural lashes before, during or after application. Most people get used to how they look with their eyelash extensions on, though. When their extensions are gone, their natural lashes SEEM so much smaller and thinner because they are not used to seeing them bare. It is a case of perception overriding reality. If you actually measure your lashes before and after, you would find no change.
Always remember to see proof of a trained lash technician before letting them work on your eyes!
Eyelash extensions are a tedious process and improper application can cause major side effects.

Do I need a Chemical peel, what are skin peels and how will they help your skin? This is a common thing asked at Red Lotus Skin and Peel Salon in Portland, Or.Read Now
Don't believe everything you hear about chemical peels!
Celebrity favorite, chemical peels (how else do you think they get so gorgeous?) are a great way to keep skin looking fresh, smooth and youthful. But despite their popularity many myths remain about what they can do, how they work, and what they entail. To help dispel any false ideas about chemical peels we are stepping in with the facts.
Myth #1: All chemical peels are the same.
Not all peels are created equal. “Chemical peel” is actually just a general classification for a number of chemical treatments used to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. Some are stronger than others and they provide varying results depending on the skin-saving effects you’re after.
Myth #2: Getting a chemical peels means lots of downtime.
Post-peel recovery time depends on the type and strength of peel you have had, but many don’t call for downtime. For example, the common alpha-hydroxy and glycolic acid peels have little or no recovery time. However, the skin can be sensitive so it requires you to baby it for a couple days.
Myth #3: Chemical peels don’t really do anything.
If you think chemical peels are just another skin care promise that does not deliver, think again. After all, Cameron Diaz, Halle Berry and the other Hollywood stars who reportedly love them cannot be wrong. Chemical peels can be effective for photo-aging, such as age spots and wrinkles, improving acne and modest acne scarring. They are also very effective at exfoliating and smoothing the skin, as well as improving skin texture.
Myth #4: Chemical peels are bad for you.
The word “chemical” might not sound like something you should ever associate with your skin, but when performed correctly chemical peels are a safe way to improve your skin. Many chemical peels actually use naturally occurring acids found in fruits in the case of alpha hydroxy acid, and other foods like sugar cane in the case of glycolic peels.
Myth #5: Chemical peels hurt.
During some peels (a TCA or Phenol peel for example), the chemicals act as an anesthetic so pain is minimal. During alpha hydroxy acid peels, which are milder than TCA or Phenol peels, the only feeling is a slight stinging sensation during the treatment.
